Pedal for Prostate raises more than $60,000
A two-week bicycle challenge through Vietnam and Cambodia, Pedal for Prostate has raised more than $60,000 for the vital work of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). These funds will directly help Australian men and their families who have been affected by prostate cancer.
Eleven riders left Ho Chi Minh City on the 15th May and arrived in Siem Reap in Cambodia on the 28th May. The riders included:
Peter Hutchings
Neil Trethewey
Brad Smith
Conor Macgill
Janet Leslie
Jo Fairbairn
Joe Courtney
Marion Gathercole
Stephen Strum
Lois Rowan
Debra Royle
Congratulations to all Pedal for Prostate participants, and a sincere thanks for your mighty effort.
The hard work of these eleven riders will not only help deliver much needed resources to prostate cancer survivors in Australia; it also gave a particular British prostate cancer survivor the opportunity to thank Pedal for Prostate rider and well-respected oncologist Dr Stephen Strum.
Although miles apart, Dr Strum helped Mr John Cooper via his online forum P2P. Having never met face-to-face, Dr Strum was still able to provide invaluable support and advice to Mr Cooper about his advanced prostate cancer. To show his gratitude, Mr Cooper travelled to Cambodia to meet with Dr Strum, and formally thank the man that provided him with much needed support.
Debra Royle, former PCFA West Australian manager and Pedal for Prostate participant acknowledges the dedication and support they have received from people like Dr Strum and Mr Cooper.
“This challenge and the story of Dr Strum and Mr Cooper is a reminder of what can be achieved when men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer receive the support they require. We hope to encourage more donations so that PCFA can give these men and their families the resources they need,” said Ms Royle.
