The Long Ride
The Long Ride was an outstanding success
400 riders from around Australia rode into Darwin on Sunday 9th May and
were met with an huge, enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. The latest
tally of funds raised by the riders is well in excess of $120,000.
In addition, an auction on the final night also raised more than $5,000,
with some fantastic items under the hammer, including a genuine Slim
Dusty hat. Air Force personnel in Darwin also made an outstanding
donation of $5,000.
Strong media support throughout the event has meant that prostate cancer
awareness was given a huge boost, particularly in rural and regional
areas along the route of The Long Ride.
PCFA extends a huge thanks to Chris and Gail Dunne, and their organising
committee for this extraordinary community event.

PROSTATE CANCER SURVIVORS GO DRAGON BOATING
On October 25th, a group of Prostate cancer survivors took part in a Dragon Boat festival at Darling Harbour at the invitation of Dragons Abreast Australia. The aim was to raise awareness of PC and show that life goes on after PC and that we can all have a full and active part in it.
This year a concerted effort was made to enter a full boat crew of 20 prostate cancer survivors. We put together a crew made up of mainly PC survivors or their immediate families. We had a survivor who paddled with his son and another son who paddled for his Dad, who passed away this year. The crew had 2 races and won them both by a good margin.
We would like to thank Dragons Abreast Australia and especially Cynthia Kuiper, for encouraging our efforts to get a full crew of PC supporters. We would also like to thank PCFA for their support in this project. We are all trying to be part of the awareness and support system for Prostate Cancer.
Ambassador Basil Williams and Family cook up successful day for PCFA
Doug and Bernie Freeman held a very successful BBQ at their place last Sunday. Many people turned up to get fed and watered and groups included friends, relatives, football teams, softball teams and work colleagues. I've never seen so many suasage sandwiches eaten in a day. A good day was had by all and raised money for a very worthy cause. I just had to model the BBQ attire and also took a picture of the chief BBQer Doug and a set up scence to show the preparation that went into it. Thanks again to Doug and Bernie for supporting the September Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia BBQ month and bringing awareness to the local community of the importance of looking after men's health.
Cheers,
Basil ( Proud father and father in law )

'Prostate patient in battle of his life - with a committee' by Kate Benson, Medical Reporter
He has walked the Kokoda Trail and run the City2Surf but no challenge has been greater for Tony Sonneveld than battling a national committee.
The 61-year-old has advanced prostate cancer, which has metastasised into his bones, and doctors predict that he has between two and six years to live.
But that's time enough to fight the Federal Government's drug advisory panel - for the third year in a row.
Mr Sonneveld wants the chemotherapy drug Taxotere listed in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for prostate cancer. It is listed for advanced breast, lung and ovarian cancer but two attempts to have it listed for prostate cancer were rejected in 2005 and last year.
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee ruled that the cost of the drug (up to $60 million a year) outweighed the survival rates, but it has agreed to accept a third submission from the drug's manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welface predicts that 18,700 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the next year. It is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. The chief executive of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Andrew Giles, said it was 'ludicrous' that Taxotere has been rejected twice.
'It is not a cure and it has serious side effects but, for men at the end stage of their illness, it is all they have left ... This is a drug which is already listed for end-stage breast cancer. It makes you wonder if women are better lobbyists than us.'
My Sonneveld, who has had 35 sessions of radiotherapy since his diagnosis four years ago, says it will cost him about $20,000 per course of treatment unless the drug is listed.
'There is such an ineqaulity between the sexes. I've paid my taxes for 35 years and I think I deserve to receive Taxotere,' he said.
Mr Giles said that Taxotere is the only therapy for men with late-stage prostate cancer proven to extend life. It can put a woman with breast cancer into remission but would give a man with prostate cancer only another four months of life.
For My Sonneveld that is four more months with his partner, three children and six-year-old grandson - and countless more hours to promote prostate cancer testing, speak at support groups, be a mentor to sufferers and raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
